The battlefield is located only six miles from historic downtown Aiken. After the war, Aiken became the ‘Newport’ of the South, with many of the country’s wealthiest families moving here. The Vanderbilt’s, Astor’s, JFK, Fred Astaire, and others all lived or stayed in Aiken to play polo or golf at America’s second oldest golf course. Many of the fine mansions still exist. Racehorses are still trained here. Some go on to run in the Kentucky Derby. The house where General Wheeler directed the battle still exists as well as Chinaberry, the home where the wounded were cared for. Union dead are buried at First Baptist, while Confederate dead lie at St. Thaddeus.

Today, downtown Aiken is vibrant and alive with gift shops, restaurants, nightspots, and antique malls. We suggest visiting ‘The Alley’ where fine dining and entertainment can be found.

Aiken has most all of the chain restaurants, which can be found by following Hwy 19 through the town to the Southside. For fine independent dining downtown, we suggest:

Malia’s 643-3086
The Tuscany 648-7551
Up Your Alley 649-2603
The Bowery 648-2900
Aiken Brewing Company 502-0707

All are located in or near ‘The Alley.’ Call the Aiken Chamber of Commerce for more suggestions: 803-641-1111

Nightlife can be found at the historic Hotel Aiken at the center of town.
