15TH ANNUAL

HISTORY FOR KIDS PROGRAM

BATTLE OF AIKEN LIVING HISTORY FIELD TRIP

Governor’s Award For The                  Best South Carolina Event

Dr. James Butler National Award
For Best Living History Program

We are pleased to announce that for the 15th time we will conduct school tours of the battle site on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at the Battle of Aiken Living History Reenactment.  All public, private, and home school classes are invited to attend.  The event is appropriate for all age groups.

This very popular, award winning field trip, possibly the largest in South Carolina, has been attended in past years by thousands of children of all age groups.  Some schools as far away as 100 miles away came to the program.  Once again, there will be no cost to the school or children.

This year we will have new special displays and programs.  Students will not want to miss this!

The children may explore authentic period Civil War soldier’s campsites and sutler’s (period merchant’s) campsites.  Other programs include: how to fire a cannon; the role of women in the war; period women's dress; how cavalry were equipped; historic music; 19th century crafts: woodworking, blacksmithing, horse care; and the role of infantry in the war.  Authentic uniforms and equipment will be exhibited.

These exhibits will be placed at numbered stations.  Classes may rotate at their own pace between the stations.

Again we will have a small skirmish that will be recreated by the troops.  Your kids will not want to miss this!

Last year, most classes spent four hours at the site.  There is no set time frame however.  The site opens at 9:00 and will stay open till 3:00. Hamburgers, hotdogs, and cokes will be available for sale, or students may bring their own lunch.  Some souvenir items will be available as well.

Students are welcome to ask questions and to interact with the participants. They are welcome to bring cameras. Warm clothing, pants, and a hat are recommended. Comfortable, covered walking shoes are recommended. Even with optimum weather conditions, a windbreaker at minimum is recommended.

Please distribute this letter and form to fellow faculty members. To register your class, all you need to do is to copy the form on the next page and fax it to 803-643-8486. You will not be contacted back by us unless you have some specific question.
