Living History Field Trip

Dr. James Butler National Award For Best Living History Program

As is tradition with the annual reenactment, the camp and battleground opens to students the Friday before the actual Battle of Aiken is fought. Schools from throughout South Carolina and Georgia bus in children by the thousands for the Living History Field Trip as they learn how to fire muskets and view exhibits on the role of blacks and women in the Civil War. The cannon demonstration is by far the most popular event of the day, which also features tours of a Civil War camp, and discussions on life during the Confederate era. The level of displays and events is subject to change due to the availability of reenactors and safety issues for the various programs.

All public, private, and home school classes are invited to attend the event that is appropriate for all ages.

ADMISSION: Free

DATE: Friday, Feb. 25; gates open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

FOOD: Hamburgers, hotdogs and soft drinks are available for purchase; although students are welcome to bring packed lunches.

WHAT TO BRING: A camera, umbrella, warm clothing, a windbreaker, comfortable walking shoes and a hat. Some souvenir items will be available for sale, as well.

Tentative School Program

Programs vary depending on the number of presenters and the length of their presentations. Please note that adverse weather may also affect the program.

9 to 11 am   Tour various stations at different campsites
     
9 to 3 pm   Visit crafters, including blacksmiths, woodcarvers, rope makers, and watch women cook, spin yarn, sew and make candles. Students will also tour infantry, artillery and cavalry camps, trade with period merchants and watch medical demonstrations at a field hospital.
     
11:15 to noon   Artillery presentation*
     
12:30 pm to 3 pm   Demonstration at the battlefield*
     
12:30 pm to 3 pm   Tours continue
     
3 pm   Departure at your convenience
     
Note: Food will be available prior to the 11:15 a.m. presentation on the battlefield. We recommend eating at the battle line, with everyone seated for the demonstration.

Battle Trivia
Reenacting is not a hobby that comes cheap. The reenactors obsessive eye for detail often carries a hefty price. Cannons start at $25,000. For an average infantryman, the outfitting price is $2,000 to $2,500. Muskets are the biggest expense, costing $300 to $700. Other costs include uniforms, dishes, canteens, powder and tents.
